Jym

Push-up counter for your phone camera

Phone on the floor, you facing it. Jym counts your clean reps and tells you when your form slips.

Three steps, then just do your push-ups

  1. Phone on the floor, you facing it. Prop it against something steady, a short way in front of your hands.
  2. Step back into frame and press Start. Your whole body needs to be in view, head to feet. The skeleton goes green when Jym has locked on, and counting starts after that.
  3. Do your push-ups. Jym counts the clean reps and gives short form notes as you go. Jym keeps your streak, personal best and training log.

Light helps. Dark clothes on a dark floor make the camera work harder. For more on placement, see where to put your phone for push-ups.

Form notes, not just a number

A count only means something if the reps are real. Jym tracks your joints, so as well as counting it can tell you, in a word or two, what's slipping.

  • Hips. "Hips sagging" when your middle drops, "Hips too high" when your bum lifts into a pike. Aim for one line from shoulders to ankles.
  • Depth. "Short range" when you stop a few centimetres down. Go down until your chest is close to the floor.
  • Lockout. "No lockout" when you bounce back down before your arms are straight. Finish each rep at the top.
  • Uneven shoulders. "Uneven shoulders" when one side drops lower than the other. Press evenly through both hands.

Jym also notes a dropped head ("Head dropped"). It doesn't check hand position, so keep an eye on that yourself. As general advice, hips are easiest to judge from the side. The push-up form checklist goes through each point in detail.

Questions

How does a camera push-up counter work?

A pose model finds your joints in each camera frame. Jym follows the angle at your elbows and counts a rep when you go from straight arms, down, and back up to straight arms. Because it sees your whole body, it can also check your hips, depth, lockout and shoulders.

Where should I put my phone?

On the floor, you facing it, a short way in front of your hands. Step back until your whole body is in frame, head to feet. The skeleton goes green when Jym has locked on, and counting starts after that.

Do I need to download an app?

No. Jym runs in your phone's browser, so there's nothing to install from an app store. You can add it to your home screen if you want it one tap away.

Does Jym check my push-up form?

Yes. As you go, it gives short notes: Hips sagging, Hips too high, Short range, No lockout, Head dropped and Uneven shoulders. It doesn't check hand position, so keep an eye on that yourself.

Does Jym upload my video?

No. The pose model runs in your browser, on your phone, and the video isn't uploaded. If you sign in, only the numbers are saved: time, length, rep count and form score.

Do I need an account?

No. You can count a set without signing in. Signing in adds the leaderboard and lets you invite a friend to a challenge.

How much does Jym cost?

Jym is free to start (one counted set a day). Jym Pro is $6 a month or $29 a year and adds unlimited sets, the voice coach and recordings.
