Jym

Pro beta

Squat counter for your phone camera

Prop your phone up, step back and squat. Jym, the AI push-up counter, now counts squats too, in Pro beta.

Count my squats

Push-ups are free to start (one counted set a day). Squats come with Jym Pro (beta), $6 a month or $29 a year.

Three steps to a counted set

  1. Switch to Squats. In Jym, set the toggle to Push-ups | Squats (Pro beta) and pick Squats.
  2. Prop your phone up about 2–3 metres away, at a 45° angle. Step back until your whole body is in frame, head to feet. Jym tells you when it locks on.
  3. Stand tall, then squat. Jym counts full squats, down and back up, and gives short form notes as you go.

Light helps, and so does clothing that shows your knees. Baggy joggers in a dark room make the camera work harder.

A depth that meets you where you are

If full depth isn't there yet, turn on beginner depth and Jym will accept a slightly higher squat. It's on for your first few squat sets, and you can switch it on or off before you start.

Four form notes, kept short

Jym watches your hips, knees and ankles and gives one short note at a time when something slips:

  • "Go a bit lower." A nudge to squat deeper.
  • "Push your knees out." Your knees are drifting inwards.
  • "Keep your heels down." Your heels are lifting off the floor.
  • "Chest up." Your chest is tipping too far forward.

Because it's a beta, expect these to be tuned as more people use them.

Your squats, tracked separately

Squat sets get their own stats, so they don't mix with your push-up numbers. There's a squat filter on the leaderboard (sign-in needed) and squat challenges. Share cards show your "clean squats".

Your video isn't uploaded

The pose model runs in your browser, on your phone, and the video isn't uploaded. If you sign in, only the numbers are saved. More in does Jym upload your video?

Squats are part of Jym Pro (beta)

Free to start (one counted set a day). No download and no account needed. The free set is for push-ups.

Jym Pro: $6 a month or $29 a year. Squat counting (Pro beta), unlimited counted sets, the voice coach (one voice, three tones: hype, savage or calm; it's off on Free) and recordings, which are off by default and stay in the browser on that phone.

Questions

Does Jym count squats?

Yes, as a Pro beta. Switch the toggle to Squats (Pro beta) and Jym counts full squats, down and back up, with short form notes as you go.

Where should I put my phone to count squats?

Prop it up about 2–3 metres away, at a 45° angle, so your whole body is in frame from head to feet. Jym tells you when it has locked on.

What counts as a squat?

A full squat: down, then all the way back up to standing. With beginner depth on, a slightly higher squat also counts, and Jym may say "Go a bit lower."

What is beginner depth?

A setting for when full depth isn't there yet. With it on, Jym accepts a slightly higher squat. It's on for your first few squat sets, and you can switch it on or off.

What form notes does Jym give for squats?

Four short ones: "Go a bit lower.", "Push your knees out.", "Keep your heels down." and "Chest up." Because squats are in beta, expect them to be tuned over time.

Do I need Pro to count squats?

Yes. Squat counting is part of Jym Pro while it's in beta. Jym is free to start (one counted set a day) for push-ups, and Pro is $6 a month or $29 a year.

Does Jym upload my video?

No. The pose model runs in your browser, on your phone, and the video isn't uploaded. If you sign in, only the numbers are saved.

What does beta mean here?

Squat counting is new and still being tested, so it may change as it improves. Jym is still the AI push-up counter, and squats are an extra in Pro.
